What 'FinOps Intuition' Means

FinOps intuition is the ability to immediately sense whether a proposed action is practitioner-aligned or not—without needing to consciously work through the principles. Practitioners who have internalized the framework find that wrong answers feel wrong before they can articulate why. Building this intuition requires pattern practice, not more memorization.

Intuition Self-Audit Questions

  • Principles: can you state all six principles and give a concrete example of each being violated by a trap answer?
  • Lifecycle phases: can you immediately classify any FinOps activity as Inform, Optimize, or Operate?
  • Maturity signals: can you read a scenario and identify whether the organization is Crawl, Walk, or Run in under 10 seconds?
  • Persona needs: can you state the primary concern of each of the six personas without hesitation?
  • Domain mapping: can you place any FinOps activity into one of the four domains immediately?
If You Are Still Unsure

When two answers still look equally correct after applying your intuition, ask: which answer do I need to execute FIRST before the other becomes possible? In FinOps, sequencing almost always resolves ties. Visibility enables optimization. Showback enables chargeback. Baseline enables commitment. The earlier-stage answer is almost always correct when maturity is ambiguous.

FinOpsDecode Rule

Intuition calibrated to the framework beats technique applied without principle.
