FinOps KPIs & Success Metrics

Essential FinOps KPIs

  • Cost allocation coverage (%): percentage of total cloud spend attributed to a team, product, or cost center.
  • Reservation/Savings Plan coverage (%): portion of eligible compute spend covered by a commitment discount.
  • Reservation/Savings Plan utilization (%): percentage of purchased commitments actually used.
  • Waste rate (%): idle, underutilized, or orphaned spend as a share of total cloud cost.
  • Cost per unit: unit economics metric relevant to the business (per customer, per transaction).
  • Forecast accuracy (%): how closely cloud cost forecasts match actuals.
  • Anomaly response time: average time from cost anomaly detection to resolution.
Coverage vs. Utilization

Coverage and utilization are different metrics that are often confused. Coverage measures how much of your eligible spend is discounted. Utilization measures how much of what you purchased you actually used. Low coverage wastes discount opportunity. Low utilization wastes committed spend. Both need to be tracked.

FinOpsDecode Rule

Measure what you can act on. Vanity metrics build confidence; actionable metrics build competence.
