The Anatomy of a Cloud Bill

Cloud invoices aggregate thousands of line items across services, regions, and accounts. The raw billing data—AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR), Azure Cost Management exports, or GCP BigQuery billing export—contains every charge at the resource level. FinOps practitioners must understand this data to build accurate allocation models, detect anomalies, and communicate cost trends to stakeholders.

Key Billing Data Concepts

  • Blended vs. unblended costs: unblended reflects actual rates paid per resource; blended averages costs across a consolidated billing family.
  • Amortized costs: spread upfront RI and Savings Plan payments across the commitment term for accurate monthly comparisons.
  • Credits and discounts: negotiated credits, free tier, and enterprise discounts must be accounted for separately.
  • Shared service costs: network egress, support, and shared infrastructure appear at the account level and must be allocated downstream.
Amortized vs. Unblended on the Exam

When a scenario asks how to make month-over-month cost comparisons fair when Reserved Instances are involved, the answer is amortized cost view. Unblended shows a large spike in the month of purchase that distorts trends.

FinOpsDecode Rule

Billing data is the single source of truth. Derive conclusions from data, not assumptions.
