FinOps Principles & the FinOps Lifecycle

Lesson 2 of 4

The Inform–Optimize–Operate Lifecycle

Master the three-phase FinOps lifecycle and identify which phase applies to any given scenario.

The Lifecycle Is Iterative, Not Linear

The Inform → Optimize → Operate lifecycle is a continuous loop, not a one-time progression. Organizations cycle through it repeatedly as their cloud environment grows and changes. Each iteration should improve visibility, reduce waste, and tighten governance. Exam scenarios often show organizations stuck in one phase—your job is to identify the blockage and recommend the next correct step.

What Each Phase Covers

Inform

  • Cost visibility and reporting
  • Tagging and allocation
  • Benchmark and baseline
  • Shared dashboards

Optimize

  • Rightsizing and scheduling
  • Reserved Instances and Savings Plans
  • Eliminating waste
  • Architecture tuning

Operate

  • Governance and policy
  • Accountability culture
  • Continuous improvement
  • Forecasting and budgeting
Common Exam Trap

A scenario shows an organization eager to buy Reserved Instances to save money. They have no tagging strategy and no baseline usage data. The correct answer is to build the Inform phase first. Committing without visibility is the most common and most expensive FinOps mistake.

FinOpsDecode Rule

You cannot optimize what you cannot see. Inform always comes before Optimize.
