The Six FinOps Principles
Understand each principle, why it exists, and how it resolves exam dilemmas when two answers look equally correct.

Why Principles Come Before Practices
The FinOps Foundation organizes its framework around principles that explain *why* practitioners do what they do. Before you can answer scenario questions correctly, you need to internalize each principle as a decision rule—not as a slogan. When a scenario presents a dilemma, the correct answer almost always honors one or more principles that the trap answer violates.
The Six Principles—With the Decision Logic
- Teams need to collaborate: Cost optimization requires Finance, Engineering, and Product to work together. Any answer that solves cost in one silo is wrong.
- Decisions are driven by business value: Cloud spend is justified when it supports revenue, speed, or reliability goals. Cutting cost that hurts business outcomes is not FinOps.
- Everyone takes ownership of their cloud usage: Engineers who build services own the cost of those services. Accountability follows the builder.
- FinOps data should be accessible and timely: Delayed or incomplete visibility is a governance failure. Data that reaches teams too late to act on is useless.
- A centralized team drives FinOps: A dedicated FinOps practice (team or function) sets standards and enables others. Cost management by committee fails.
- Take advantage of the variable cost model: Cloud's elasticity is a feature. Applying fixed-capacity thinking to variable-cost infrastructure is a waste.
Exams frequently test the apparent tension between 'everyone owns their costs' and 'a centralized team drives FinOps.' The resolution: the central FinOps team sets policy and provides tooling; individual teams execute and own accountability within that framework. Centralization enables autonomy—it does not replace it.
Principles are decision rules, not aspirations—apply them to break ties.
